RWSA WWS 003 Riki Adams Header Image

#003 Riki Adams of Cape Town

I have been involved in woodworking for over 25 years. It was my interior decorating business that guided me seamlessly into full-time furniture design and manufacturing. At the time, there was no shortage of ideas flowing in from my clientele wanting unique custom pieces and I struggled to find competent hands that could translate these ideas into products of the required level of precision that I have always aspired to. It was at this point that I decided to start manufacturing the pieces myself for my ever-increasing and discerning client base.

#002 – David Harker of Mowbray, Cape Town

I grew up in a woodworking family. My father was a professional woodworker and owned his own business. It is very sad that I only began woodworking as a hobby after my dad had passed on. Although I spent many hours (mainly on weekends) working as an assistant in his workshop, I had no interest whatsoever at the time in the craft. It was only some years after his passing that I picked up the craft and have never looked back.

My focus is on building guitars for the high-end market, mostly for export to America and Europe. I also do some guitar repair work and teach a guitar building course of Saturdays. I only recently completed my apprenticeship at Casimi Guitars in Muizenberg, so my business and career is still very much in the fledgling phase.

Coffee table trio

What a brilliant way to end a week! We have just taken possession of three matching coffee tables that we commissioned for our showroom in Cape Town. They each have identical stainless steel frames, but with three different bases in solid African Rosewood, Wenge and Zebrano….

cladding3

Our cladding display: wall art at its finest!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we are enormous fans of timber cladding as an architectural feature. There is something about weathering timber that connects directly to the heart and speaks to the human spirit: Wearing age and life scars proudly, battered but unbowed, resolute, dignified and graceful against the challenges of the changing…

Friday fun: cleaning up some Panga Panga slabs

Friday fun…. We’ve been feeding a few Panga Panga slabs through our surfacer to freshen them up a bit and bring out their remarkable figure. Panga Panga (Millettia stuhlmannii) grows across East Africa, particularly Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, and is nearly identical to Wenge (Millettia laurentii). It has been praised…

Treasure trove unearthed!

Believe it or not, we have found a bundle of Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra) which we thought had gone missing. This is probably the last Brazilian we will carry due to stringent export regulations, CITES restrictions etc. The wood was legally harvested many years ago,…
