Woodworker Sessions

WELCOME TO THE RARE WOODS SA WOODWORKER SESSIONS INTERVIEW SERIES

WELCOME TO THE RARE WOODS USA WOODWORKER SESSIONS INTERVIEW SERIES.

Here, we hope to discover more about what makes our woodworkers tick, how you became involved in the craft, how and why you build your pieces and maybe learn a few secret techniques and tips along the way!

#003 Riki Adams of Cape Town

I have been involved in woodworking for over 25 years. It was my interior decorating business that guided me seamlessly into full-time furniture design and manufacturing. At the time, there was no shortage of ideas flowing in from my clientele wanting unique custom pieces and I struggled to find competent hands that could translate these ideas into products of the required level of precision that I have always aspired to. It was at this point that I decided to start manufacturing the pieces myself for my ever-increasing and discerning client base.

#002 – David Harker of Mowbray, Cape Town

I grew up in a woodworking family. My father was a professional woodworker and owned his own business. It is very sad that I only began woodworking as a hobby after my dad had passed on. Although I spent many hours (mainly on weekends) working as an assistant in his workshop, I had no interest whatsoever at the time in the craft. It was only some years after his passing that I picked up the craft and have never looked back.

#001 – Theunis Fick of Scarborough, Cape Town

My focus is on building guitars for the high-end market, mostly for export to America and Europe. I also do some guitar repair work and teach a guitar building course of Saturdays. I only recently completed my apprenticeship at Casimi Guitars in Muizenberg, so my business and career is still very much in the fledgling phase.

Our Interviewer

Tobias Lochner

Born in Zambia and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, I have been converting big bits of timber into small bits of timber since the age of 8. I knew the founder of Rare Woods well, having bought my first pieces of Black Walnut and Mahogany from Rory somewhere in the early 1980’s ( I am still a regular client).

My passion is for 18th and 19th century American and European reproduction pieces and French style marquetry. I write on woodworking for the South African version of Popular Mechanics and other local publications both online and in print. I love to teach and regularly hold one-on-one specialist classes in hand tool woodworking in my woodshop.
